BALTIMORE (September 25, 2014) – The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) announces today that Maryland was awarded a grant of $3.5 million to target diabetes and heart disease prevention activities in five communities—Baltimore City; Washington, Allegany/Garrett; Caroline/Dorchester; and Somerset/Wicomico/Worcester counties.

Baltimore, MD (September 24, 2014) -- Today the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) confirmed the presence of enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) in Maryland. The virus, which has been associated with respiratory infections in children across the country, was identified in a specimen collected from a hospitalized child in suburban Maryland and was sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for confirmation.*

 Baltimore, MD (September 15, 2014) -- According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration almost 4,000 children were killed and an estimated 613,000 were injured in traffic crashes between 2008-2012. In Maryland, the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) “Injury Report Book – 2011” cites traffic crashes as the leading cause of injury-related deaths for children aged 5 -14 years old and the second leading cause of injury-related death for 0 – 4 year olds.
