BALTIMORE, MD (September 15, 2011)-Maryland seniors go to the emergency room for falls more than any other type of injury, according to state hospital discharge data.
Each day in 2009, 78 Marylanders aged 65 and older were treated in an emergency department for a fall, and another 42 older adults were hospitalized for the same reason, according to the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH). Hospitalizations alone cost over $130 million, per the Maryland Assessment Tool for Community Health (MATCH).
To bring awareness to the dangers of falling, September 18-24 is designated by Governor O'Malley as Fall Prevention Awareness Week in Maryland.
