Dr. Robert Myers Appointed Director of State's Laboratories Administration After National Search PDF Print E-mail
BALTIMORE, MD (October 11, 2011) - The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) is announcing the appointment of Dr. Robert Myers as Director of Maryland's Laboratories Administration. Dr. Myers previously served as the Deputy Laboratory Director for Scientific Programs.

Dr. Myers has provided outstanding leadership to the Laboratories Administration as Acting Laboratory Director for the past six months.  He began his career as a Sanitarian for the Frederick County Health Department and a year later, in 1980, he transferred to the Laboratories Administration in Baltimore as a Laboratory Scientist.  He progressively assumed more leadership positions as Unit Head, Regional Laboratory Director, Molecular Biology Division Chief and Scientific Programs Deputy Director.

"We look forward to the array of experience Dr. Myers brings to his position as Director," said Dr. Joshua M. Sharfstein, DHMH Secretary. "His knowledge of the Administration and his proven leadership skills will be an asset to the people we serve."

One of Dr. Myers upcoming tasks will be to lead his staff's transition in 2014 to the new State of Maryland Public Health Laboratory in East Baltimore. The building will be located in the Science + Technology Park at Johns Hopkins at the corner of Ashland and Rutland Streets. The construction of the five-story, 234,000 gross square foot, LEED Silver building is expected to begin this fall.

The Laboratories Administration provides essential scientific support to wide-ranging public health decision-making. Its role is integral to the improvement and protection of our residents' health. In keeping with the responsibilities and leadership required of the Director of the Laboratories Administration, the Department undertook a national search to fill this position and convened an interview panel that included national leaders in laboratory science.

Under Dr. Myers' leadership, the Laboratories Administration is on track to set national performance standards toward the mission of improving public health in Maryland.
