Snow Hill, Md. (October 19, 2011) – The Worcester County Health Department in collaboration with the Maryland State Highway Administration is pleased to announce that work is beginning this week to build and replace sidewalks, cross-walks, signage, and adding ADA ramps in order to improve the accessibility and safety of students and parents in getting to and from the schools in Berlin and Snow Hill.
The $118,006 contract for the sidewalk and pedestrian safety improvements was awarded by Worcester County to Image Asphalt Maintenance, Inc. of Pasadena, Md. The work is to begin around October 19 and will take approximately four weeks, weather permitting, and should be completed by November 30.
The work at Berlin Intermediate School will take place on Franklin Avenue between U.S. 113 and Williams Street. In Snow Hill the work will be primarily on Coulbourne Lane approaching and in front of the elementary, middle, and Cedar Chapel schools. The work in both communities will start around 9 a.m. and end at approximately 2:30 p.m. in order to not interfere with school operations. There may be some work done on Saturdays or during after school hours to help expedite the completion of the project.
The Worcester County Health Department has worked with the Worcester County Commissioners, the Worcester County Board of Education, and the Maryland Highway Safety Office in order to receive these federal highway funds. The Safe Routes to School project is designed to encourage children to walk or bike to school by making it safer and a more appealing transportation alternative.
The Pocomoke community is also slated to receive funding for this project in the near future to improve pedestrian access around Pocomoke Middle School.
Questions regarding this project should be directed to the Worcester County Health Department Prevention Program at 410-632-0056. |
