Local health professionals become certified as healthcare emergency professionals PDF Print E-mail

Snow Hill, Md. (Nov. 2, 2011) -- The local health agencies of Somerset, Wicomico and Worcester counties are pleased to announce several newly certified healthcare emergency professionals (CHEPs). 


 Each of the following individuals passed the CHEP course developed by the International Board for Certification of Safety Managers. The certification standardizes management and system principles in the field of emergency planning, response, mitigation and recovery in healthcare settings.

 

 

Somerset County:

Barb Logan, Somerset County Health Department public health emergency planner.

Ken Sterling, McCready Foundation facilities manager.

Stephanie Howard, McCready Foundation registered nurse and patient safety officer.

 

 

Wicomico County:

Bernadette Croswell, Wicomico County Health Department emergency preparedness clerk.

Danny Drew, Wicomico County Health Department public health emergency planner.

Ricky Sanders, Peninsula Regional Medical Center director of facilities management.

Ronnie Ennis, Peninsula Regional Medical Center safety coordinator.

Margaret Smith, Deer’s Head Hospital registered nurse.

Ruth Jones, Deer’s Head Hospital registered nurse.

 

 

Worcester County:

Debra Stevens, Worcester County Health Department, nursing program manager.

Robyn Tytomi-Dalton, Worcester County Health Department public health emergency planner.

Glenn R. Lebedz, Atlantic General Hospital director of support services.

 

 

Regional:

Tim Cooper, Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Office of Preparedness and Response, Region IV Hospital Preparedness Program coordinator.

 

The CHEP program and exam encompasses information, standards and best practices from creditable sources such as the National Fire Protection Association, American Society for Testing and Materials, Department of Homeland Security, Environmental Protection Agency, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Federal Emergency Management Agency, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Agency for Toxic Substances, Disease Registry, American National Standard Institute and the Joint Commission.

 

CHEP holders must re-certify every five years.

 

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services through the Hospital Preparedness Program provides funding for staff to attend the CHEP program.

Shellfish and shellfish products from Korea should not be eaten
 
BALTIMORE, MD (May 17, 2012) - The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) is advising consumers not to eat any fresh or frozen molluscan shellfish that come from South Korea.  Molluscan shellfish includes fresh or frozen oysters, clams, and mussels, whole and roe-on scallops, either shucked or in the shell, whole or in part.  Crabs and shrimp are not molluscan shellfish.  Shellfish grown and produced in Maryland are not affected. There are no recent cases of illness in Maryland known to be related to Korean shellfish.

Baltimore (May 16, 2012) --The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) has announced the appointment of Craig Stofko as the Health Officer for Somerset County Health Department effective today.  He has served as Interim Health Officer since August 2011.  
 
"We are delighted that Craig accepted the position as leader of the Somerset County Health Department," said Dr. Joshua M. Sharfstein, DHMH Secretary. "We look forward to having him join Maryland's public health leadership team."

Baltimore, MD (May 8, 2012) –The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) joins the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the Maryland Hepatitis Coalition in observance of National Hepatitis Awareness Month.  DHMH also joins the Maryland Hepatitis Coalition in honoring a number of local heroes for their exemplary work and dedication in the battle against this disease.
