SNOW HILL, Md. (Nov. 22, 2011) – The Worcester County Health Department has a limited number of Flumist®, a nasal spray flu vaccine, available to people ages 2 to 18 years old.
Flumist® has been offered in school-based clinics to protect children from getting the flu, and is now available at our clinical locations. Flumist® is a live, attenuated flu vaccine meaning that it contains a live, but weakened influenza virus. It is sprayed into the nostrils. The vaccine is as effective as the flu shot in preventing influenza illness.
Flumist® is not recommended for children younger than 5 with asthma or one or more episodes of wheezing within the past year; pregnant women; people who have long term health problems with heart disease, lung disease, asthma, kidney or liver disease; metabolic disease such as diabetes; or anemia and other blood disorders. It is also not recommended for anyone with a weakened immune system, certain muscle and nerve disorders.
Flumist® vaccine is available for Worcester County residents ages 2 to 18 at the health department locations in Pocomoke, Snow Hill and Berlin. There is no charge for Flumist® vaccine. Community clinics will be held weekly on the following days and times:
