| DHMH Suspends Eastern Shore Physician’s Controlled Dangerous Substances Registration |

BALTIMORE (December 8, 2011) – The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) acted on December 6, 2011 to suspend the authority of Salisbury physician, Brent Fox, M.D., to write prescriptions for opiates, narcotics and all other drugs classified as controlled dangerous substances (CDS).
The summary suspension order issued by DHMH states that a quality review conducted by an independent auditor on behalf of a managed care organization in which Dr. Fox was a participating physician found that Dr. Fox failed to conform to the professional standard of care mandated for doctors who practice pain management medicine, and that his actions placed the public in danger. A doctor employed by DHMH reviewed these findings and agreed with them.
DHMH has authority under State law to register all prescribers and dispensers of drugs classified as controlled dangerous substances (CDS). The Division of Drug Control, the part of DHMH that conducts inspections relating to controlled dangerous substances, investigated Dr. Fox’s prescribing practices associated with CDS drugs.
Based on this investigation, DHMH concluded that Dr. Fox’s CDS prescribing practices are not consistent with good clinical practice. DHMH further concluded that Dr. Fox’s authority to prescribe CDS medications is a danger to public health and violates State law.
As a result of its findings, DHMH has summarily suspended and intends to revoke Dr. Fox’s Controlled Dangerous Substances registration. A hearing will be held on December 12, 2011, in Baltimore. For more information, visit http://dhmh.maryland.gov/cdslicense.html. |
