Second Annual Ocean City Out of the Darkness Community Walk for Suicide Prevention

OCEAN CITY, MD (August 13, 2013)At 10am on Saturday, September 28 at the Worcester County Health Department on Caroline Street in Ocean City, suicide prevention activists will gather for the Second Annual Out of the Darkness Community Walk for Suicide Prevention.

“Because suicide rates in Worcester County and surrounding communities are historically higher than both state and national averages, the Ocean City walk to bring awareness of suicide’s risk is especially important.  The funds raised by walkers’ pledges are used exclusively in suicide prevention programs, both nationally and by local organizations,” said Brittany Hines, Worcester County Health Department walk organizer.

Like other fundraising walks, participants are asked to solicit pledges from friends, colleagues and family members.  Many form teams in memory of lost loved ones, carrying photos and mementos of their friend or family member.  To register, support a walker or make a pledge or donation, visit http://www.outofthedarkness.org and search for the Ocean City event.  Walkers will join thousands of people nationwide to raise funds to support research aimed at improving our understanding of suicide and how to prevent it.

This year’s walk sponsors include the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Atlantic General Hospital, the Jesse Klump Memorial Fund, the Life Crisis Center and the Worcester County Health Department.
