The Prevention Services unit includes health education and prevention programs that promote healthy lifestyle practices through a variety of prevention strategies and interventions designed to reduce the risks among individuals, families, and communities in Worcester County.  This is an interdisciplinary team of health professionals including:  prevention specialist, nurses, health educators, outreach workers, social workers, an exercise physiologist, and a nutritionist.
 
The Prevention Services Team is divided into programs addressing the following health areas:  Cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment for breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer; drug and alcohol prevention; tobacco control and cessation; chronic disease prevention focusing on diabetes; parent education; highway safety and Safe Routes to School Coordination, Combating Underage Drinking; HIV/AIDS prevention; and Domestic Violence prevention.  Strategies include health promotion and education, trainings, after school programs, health screenings, resource materials, and community advocacy.

Prevention Program Services are available to community groups, youth groups, schools, churches, and worksites.

(Annapolis, MD, Feb. 17, 2012)—The Maryland Community Health Resources Commission (CHRC) issued today its Call for Proposals to support local action strategies around implementation of the State Health Improvement Process (SHIP).  Launched earlier this year by the Maryland Department of Health & Mental Hygiene (DHMH), the SHIP provides a framework for accountability, local action, and public engagement to improve overall public health outcomes in our state.

 BALTIMORE, MD (February 15, 2012) –This tax season, Marylanders can join the cancer fight with a quick checkmark when completing their state income tax form, according to the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH). The Maryland income tax form provides state residents the opportunity to donate to the Maryland Cancer Fund which in turn supports cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment programs.
