Prevention
Promotes healthy practices through a variety of prevention strategies and interventions Includes an interdisciplinary team offering health promotion and educational programs, trainings, screenings, and resource materials Services available to community groups, youth groups, schools, churches, and worksites.
Alcohol, Tobacco,& Other Drugs Prevention (Play it Safe)
Coordinates comprehensive alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs prevention program through education, training, public awareness, community organization, and advocacy. Includes parenting, life skills training, technical assistance and mini-grants for community-based organizations, resource materials, coordination of state high school graduation project, elderly wellness program, and youth programs.
Injury Prevention
Develops strategies to address primary causes of injury to Worcester County residents. Programs target domestic violence, farm safety, and transportation related injuries to children. Coordinates a child safety seat and bicycle helmet distribution program.
Highway Safety Program
Implements a comprehensive community traffic safety program to increase public awareness of the need to use safe practices and devices while riding and walking. Educational,
promotional, and enforcement efforts focus on drinking and driving, vehicle safety restraint usage, underage drinking, highway safety four seasons compaign, bicycle safety, pedestrian
safety, and after-prom party support.
Breast & Cervical Cancer Program
Educational programs and community outreach regarding risk reduction for breast and cervical cancer. Provides screening and follow-up for women aged 40 to 64 years who lack insurance
coverage and/or have inadequate insurance coverage to cover the following services: Mammograms, Breast Examination, Pap Test, Pelvic Examination, and Colposcopy.
Tobacco Prevention & Cessation
Uses educational, support, and social change strategies to reduce the use of tobacco. Provides educational programs, trainings, awareness campaigns, and promotional materials. Smoking
cessation program designed for groups using behavior modification techniques or individuals which may include the nicotine patch vouchers for qualified participants. Designed to
reduce cancer and cardiovascular disease mortality.
Cardiovascular Disease Service
Includes health promotion, patient education, and community programs designed to increase healthy behaviors and reduce cardiovasculor disease mortality and morbidity Includes risk
reduction programs, nutrition and diabetes education and counseling, screenings for blood pressure, health assessments, physical activity assessments, and blood pressure training.
Promotes physical activity through a walking club called "Just Walk" which offers incentives, education, and recognition for becoming physically active. Custom designed work site
wellness progroms are available.
HIV/AIDS Prevention
Provide HIV/AIDS education, training, and public awareness programs targeting community and high risk populations. Provide mini grants to community based organizations, home-based
education, and regional workshops.
Teen Pregnancy Prevention
Provide technical assistance, health education, and promotional efforts to reduce teen pregnancy. Responsible for implementing several community based initiatives designed to affect
teen pregnancy including the Young Men Unite Project and the Just For Girls Abstinence Education Program.
Cancer Control
Promote strategies identified in the Maryland and Worcester County Cancer Control Plans. This includes
the coordination of the Worcester County Cancer Coalition, providing educational
programs, and promoting cancer awareness initiatives.
