Rabid bat population increases in Maryland. 10th annual World Rabies Day promotes prevention of potentially fatal disease.
 
 
Baltimore, MD (September 28, 2016) – For the second consecutive year, Maryland is experiencing an increase in the number of rabid bats. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is promoting the World Rabies Day theme of “Rabies: Educate. Vaccinate. Eliminate.” to increase awareness about the world’s most fatal disease and how to prevent it.

2016 Maryland overdose deaths continue grim trend; 920 have died so far. Health Secretary Mitchell repeats warning about fentanyl in new PSA.
 
 
Baltimore, MD (September 22, 2016) – The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has posted to its website the second-quarter 2016 data report of fatal overdoses. From January to June, Maryland saw 920 deaths related to overdose, 319 more than this point last year. The report is posted at https://goo.gl/oNlvlz.

Falls Prevention Awareness Week in Maryland, Sept. 18-24, 2016. From 1999-2014, rate of fatal falls among U.S. seniors increased by 100 percent.
 
Baltimore, MD (September 16, 2016) – Maryland seniors go to the emergency room for falls more than for any other type of injury. To bring awareness to the dangers of falling, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan has designated the week of September 18-24, 2016, to be Falls Prevention Awareness Week.
